Fun Facts:
--This version of FAMINE is a re-recorded version of an old SHOTGUN FACELIFT anthem. The lyrics have been expanded and the song structure has been tweaked to blend the older and newer eras of the band, combing a place for fans old and new to come together in celebration of the new album.
--FAMINE has been used a theme song for a popular YouTube channel of a video game streamer.
--To realize the vision of an entirely raw sound that the band had in mind in order to capture the band's live energy, this song (and the entire album) was tracked as live as possible with the entire band playing at once. And for this track specifically, to keep in line with the primal and real sound, John tracked the vocals for this song immediately after screaming for a whole eight hours in the studio. No screams were re-used or copy/pasted for the entire album. All screams are done live and individual.
--The breakdown for FAMINE has undergone many structural changes. In the original composition, the rhythm remains static throughout the section. In the new version, it expands in the rolls after the initial rhythm that the band and the song has become known for. Damien's lead was then layered on top of Matt's thunderous rolls that continue through the section.
--For a change of pace, this version of the song was sped up, and when Damien performed the solo, the hammer-ons were picked individually and played on a different amp to smooth the tone and add an extra layer of texture.
lyrics
VERSE 1
This house, the final bone bound for the break,
The edges of this place widen out into a grave that opens now yet further still.
Our coffin for the burn, burn, burn it all down. (DOWN!)
Placate this hollow cavity inside without a soul.
CHORUS
I see you waiting in the darkness.
A demon feeding on this carcass that I called home.
VERSE 2
Your endless screams are the truth of eulogy.
One last tragedy, a moratorium of epitaphs for all the ways we bleed.
These hands broken between you and me,
Break, break it all down. (DOWN!)
And drive home these nails that we never wanted found.
BREAKDOWN
You are a sick and twisted disease.
I feel ashamed for all the times I came to you on my knees.
You said this time it would be different, but you lied.
Except this time I feel empty inside your eyes.
The sex and drugs and pain, shaking on this dreadful night.
Now all your plagues have left me empty, consumed by this divide.
OUTRO
So you make famine, this place . . .
Our final bone bound for the break.
You make famine, this place . . .
Our final bone bound for the break.
